Genres

Genre is the category of fiction that describes your story. Sci-fi, horror, romance and comedy are all genres. Writing can be cross genre such as a sci-fi horror or romantic comedy.

I read somewhere that sci-fi was the biggest selling genre in the UK. Maybe you should try your hand at it?

I’ve noticed two major types of sci-fi. The first is where you have a character driven story set in a sci-fi setting. The second involves the exploration of an idea. Stephen Baxter is an expert in writing the second type of sci-fi novel but I feel that this genre has limited appeal to those who would not normally read books of this genre.

If you find that you like to write in the fantasy genre we have a great article on how to create fantasy worlds that’s worth checking out.

If you can’t decide on which genre to write in, try starting with the genres you read a lot of as you’ll have a good level of familiarity with it.
