Theme and symbolism
Theme is an idea or topic that runs through your story. Symbolism is the representation of something in a symbolic form. For example, the theme of your story could be jealousy and can be symbolised by the appearance of someone with green eyes every time the main character is jealous. Theme and symbolism don’t have to be connected.
Stuck for a theme? There are many good books full of quotations. Flick through and pick one at random. Use the wisdom contained within the quote as the central theme of your story.
Try not to rely too heavily on theme or symbolism as the basis for your story. Use it to complement rather than drive the story.
